Welcome to the Film Festival of Independent (Indie) Indian (India) Films. It features four films, four stories from various parts of India, the fates of ordinary people in extraordinary life situations. Whether it is a couple’s passion for meat consumption that gets out of control in Assam, the moving story of a paralyzed little girl in the Himalayas, the revolt of oppressed women in the Gujarati desert and their desire to dance, or the search of a Kashmiri “half widow” for her missing husband. These are situations that we can hardly imagine from the comfort of our European living-rooms, and similar films can help us broaden our horizons and awareness of what life is like on the other side of the world.
As fans of Indian films (and organizers of the Prague Bollywood Film Festival), we often regretted that most viewers only know Indian cinema through Bollywood and see it as something strange, exotic – while most Indian films are actually made outside of the big studios in Mumbai. And while Bollywood films are fun and visually opulent, there is no need to pretend that they have anything to do with the real life of normal Indians. Therefore, we decided to offer the inquisitive viewer the opportunity to get to know films that truly reflect contemporary Indian society while not abandoning artistic quality (as evidenced by the number of awards from various festivals that each film has received).
What is more – big Bollywood blockbusters are often available on most streaming platforms and can be downloaded within minutes. But you won’t be able to see the movies we want to show you anywhere else than at the festival.
So do not hesitate and come – we will look forward to seeing you.
